In a move which almost brings the two companies full circle, O2 and BT have announced that they have entered into a partnership which will see BT take on responsibility for maintaining and upgrading O2's networks. NI invests £18m in high-speed broadband

Northern Ireland's Department of Finance and Personnel has contracted BT to maximize high-speed broadband coverage through the country.

According to a contract notice in the Official Journal of the European Union on 14 January, it has provided capital grant funding of £18m on behalf of the Department for Enterprise, Trade and Investment (DETI). This will be used as gap funding to extend the broadband infrastructure.

An MSP has called on hotels to offer free broadband as standard as part of their offerings. Free broadband connections should be offered to guests at all hotels, it has been suggested.

John Park, MSP for Mid-Scotland and Fife, has written to VisitScotland and the British Hospitality Association over the issue, claiming such web services should be available as standard.
